webhostingIf you are still a novice into browsing through the world of cyberspace, web hosting might be a term alien to you or perhaps familiar but do not fully understand what it is and how it works because it can range from fairly simple, to extremely complex levels. A web host is needed with every website for guests to view online. If you want your created website to be seen by anyone through the Internet, you need to upload it to a server. A server is primarily responsible for storing all your web pages and loading them when clients visit your site. The company who provides you with this is your web host.

Web hosting is a business in which they will charge you based on how much storage space and data transfer you need because there is a direct cost involved in both storing your pages and files and allowing them to be downloaded by visitors. Price differs depending on the storage capacity, loading speed, tools and other features of your choice. Although there are hosting services that are free of charge, the range of services it offers lack quality and is very limited. After signing up for a web hosting service, the files you created that you want to appear in your website like images, videos, music, animations, borders or written contents will be sent to their storage facility, and they will make these pages available online.

There are 4 basic components in web hosting:

  1. Administrator: Responsible for monitoring the server, security, site receptiveness and ensuring that the website is properly backed up.
  2. Software: An Operating System like Windows and a web server is required, but in addition, you may also need some software to track web traffic or accepting credit cards to name a few.
  3. Hardware: For connectivity to take place, servers and networking devices like switches and routers are required hardware while firewalls and load balancing are some hardware that is optional.
  4. Connectivity: The manner in which your Internet Service Provider or ISP provides access to your website. The faster, the better.

Factors to be considered when choosing your web host:

  1. Web Hosting Location: Select the hosting location where the largest part of your clients stays.
  2. Flexible Control: Your web-hosting provider should give you full control over all your settings like installing applications or whatever you want in your hosting environment.
  3. Uptime: At least 99% up time should be expected. Make a research about the performance history of the company and find out the up time.
  4. SSH Access: Choose a hosting provider that gives you SSH access. It will make your work simpler and your life easier.
  5. Disk Space & Bandwidth: Since a lot of hosting providers now cater for unlimited disk space and unlimited data transfer limit, make sure to have enough storage space and data transfer for future web trafficking purposes.

You also have to choose which level of service is going to be perfect for your website. Web hosting services have four categories, namely: Shared, Co-Location, Managed and Developed. Administration, software, hardware, and connectivity levels vary with each category.

It is never too easy to pick the right web host, since there are hundreds of them to choose from. Check the reliability of the web host in terms of service such as keeping websites online and in dealing with inquiries and technical troubles. A web host that leaves your website frequently off-line with no quick answers or solutions for your queries is usually unreliable. It is difficult to determine the best web host by simply reading review sites. They might be completely faking it, or it’s just a setup by web host companies to crash their competitors. Many are dishonest review sites and a lot of them are just being paid. You just have to be alert on how to recognize these scams. Just keep in mind that comments and detailed review on the more vital aspects of hosting such, as support and downtime usually constitute a quality web hosting review site. While a poor hosting review site tells about insignificant points like a host’s amount of server space given. This is usually not a precise measurement of hosting quality.
